As I’ve got older, I’ve come to love the Karoo. Those koppies, windmills, sheep, and round cement dams are romantic, winsome and unusual – something utterly unique to South Africa. The Karoo is all about vast landscapes and certainly, for me, one of South Africa’s most captivating regions. True, much like we used to do, we would pass through Karoo towns on our way to the coast, but these days the towns are wonderful places to explore and to find out more about their fascinating history, the warm hospitality, and the fantastic scenery.
The Karoo is a place where historic churches overlook quiet streets lined with beautifully preserved Victorian and Cape Dutch buildings. Local cafés serve homemade treats, and the wide-open landscapes invite visitors to reconnect with nature. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend away, a family road trip, or simply a break from city life, the Karoo offers an authentic South African travel experience unlike any other.
If you’re planning a Karoo road trip, these ten charming towns deserve a place on your itinerary.
