Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park – Northern Cape

This park covers a huge area, part in South Africa and part in Botswana. The park was formed by combining South Africa’s former Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and Botswana’s Gemsbok National Park.

The part that is in South Africa is situated in the far northern region of the Northern Cape province, bordering the Kalahari Desert basin. It lies in a sandy basin – the Kalahari Desert – and is a massive conservation area of some 3.6 million hectares.

The cool thing about this park is that it is completely unfenced, so animals are able to move freely across the international border. If you visit the park, you’ll also be able to travel between the two African countries within the park. South African National Parks (SANParks) helps manage things on the South African side.

The arid landscapes of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park appeal to many people. It’s a romantic getaway for sure, and it’s these unique landscapes, together with the African wildlife, that also provide such fantastic photo opportunities.

In this magical park, you will see that Twee Rivieren is the biggest rest camp and also the administrative base.  Whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple or you’re looking for family accommodation, Twee Rivieren has all you need. You’ll be pleased to know it has a swimming pool and a wheelchair-friendly information centre. There are also shops, and petrol is also available.

Twee Rivieren is situated on a dry riverbed, but there are other camps within the park such as Nossob, Mata-Mata Rest Camp, Kieliekrankie Wilderness Camp, and Bitterpan Wilderness Camp, among others.
