Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is made up of 37,000 hectares of diverse landscapes in the magnificent Waterberg area. You’ll love it and find that there’s stunning wildlife in the reserve, including the Big 5. Another perk is that vehicles aren’t allowed to clamour around predator kills, blocking views for everyone. Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is also known for its conservation efforts, and in fact, it became a conservation area in 1993.
Today, you can trust that a trip to Welgevonden will ensure a perfect safari holiday. It is found in the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and is about a 2-and-a-half-hour drive from Gauteng and just 45 minutes if you fly there. It’s also a malaria-free wilderness reserve, and it simply offers its lucky guests the most awesome views of African wilderness.
What is excellent about Welgevonden is that they only take in a limited number of guests, and in fact, guests are collected from the gate by a field guide and are then transported to the respective game lodges. It is important to note that the reserve is not open to day visitors.
At Welgevonden you’ll find several kinds of accommodation, whether you want family accommodation, couples’ accommodation, self-catering accommodation, luxury safari accommodation or conference facilities – whatever you choose, you’ll be in for a romantic getaway. There are many lodges in the reserve, but we’ll name just a few.
- Self-Catering Accommodation: Shawu’s Hide, Bhubesi Game Lodge
- Child-Friendly Accommodation: Mhondoro, Thaba Metsi, Elephant’s Crossing
- Luxury: Rhino Plains, Clifftop Exclusive Safari Hideaway
Nearly all of the lodges in Welgevonden are designed to welcome a select number of guests in luxury and privacy. For guests wanting ultimate privacy, Welgevonden offers a selection of lodges available for exclusive use.
The wonderful game reserve is home to close to 70 mammal species, which include the Big Five. Game drives become super exciting, as many guests look out for the rarer species such as cheetah, aardvark and aardwolf, among others. There are lots of beautiful birds to look out for as well. In addition to the wildlife, ancient Bushman rock art can be found on the reserve as well, and guided safaris can take you there.
